What if my male dog is not fixed/intact? What hip lift style should I choose?Updated 8 months ago
The overall choice of the hip lift depends on the positioning of the dog's penis and testicles, as the harness shouldn't put pressure on them upon lifting.
This comes down to determining 2 (two) aspects of your boy's anatomy:
This comes down to determining 2 (two) aspects of your boy's anatomy:
- Choosing the correct hip lift for a male dog:
To start, you still need to determine which rear hip lift your male pup would wear based on the positioning of his penis.
2. Does your boy have the space between his penis and testicles?
- If he requires the conventional style hip lift, he would need to have the space in between the shaft of the penis and the testicles to be able the wear the conventional hip lift style. That way, the support pad can rest flat under the pelvis and not impede the testicles or push up on them upon lifting. This could be anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of space based on the harness size needed.
- If he requires the U-band style, we suggest removing the small square pelvic pad that is secured with Velcro to the tail straps to provide extra room for the testicles.
You will really need to look at and under your dog to determine the positioning of the penis compared to the testicles and if there is enough room.

If the dog does not have the space and the testicles rest right behind the penis, then we would recommend a dog sling instead of our harness, which would not get near that area in question but still allow you to lift your dog comfortably and securely.
